What to Wear to Christmas Markets in Europe
Are you wondering what to wear to Europe’s Christmas Markets? I will show you everything you need to pack whether you visit Lille, Cologne, Frankfurt, or one of the smaller Christmas Markets spread across the country.
On my recent trip to Europe, I discovered the perfect way to dress for a visit to the Christmas Markets. I’m excited to share my travel packing list with you.
Expect cold weather, so layer up with warm clothes and cozy accessories. But remember, pack just what is necessary to avoid overpacking.
Packing appropriately is the key to a memorable and comfortable European Christmas market holiday trip.
The temperatures usually range from the 20s to 30s Fahrenheit (-1 to -6 Celsius), so dressing warmly is not just a suggestion; it’s crucial. I have clothes that cover all your essential items.
Below is my practical packing list for the European Christmas Markets. Everything should fit in your small carry-on, but don’t forget to bring an extra bag for shopping! You’ll want to take advantage of the unique gifts and decorations available.
Essential to wear for a winter Christmas markets
I always pack merino wool sweaters because they keep me cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
They are also lightweight and packable. Additionally, I added a wool hoodie/sweater, some of which are made of cashmere, which is light, warm, and not bulky.
1. Cashmere button down
2. Wool Hoodie
3. Wool
4. Merino
Thermals
Thermals are clothing designed to keep you warm in cold weather. They help maintain your body temperature and comfort you on a chilly day.
Thermals come in various styles, including tops, bottoms, and full-body suits. Depending on your needs and preferences, they can be worn as a base layer beneath your regular clothing or as standalone garments. They’re comfortable and practical and can greatly improve your comfort and warmth while enjoying the outdoors.
I wear thermal camisoles under my sweater to stay warm but find full thermal underclothing too bulky.
What to wear for warm shoes/boots
Add toastie pads for extra warmth and comfort if your boots are not warm enough.
Even if you don’t like heavy boots, you have options. For instance, if you’re a running shoe lover, you can get shoes with lining inside to keep your feet warm.
From my personal experience, I wear wool insoles inside my boots to keep my feet warm and cozy. A friend uses wool from her sheep to make these fantastic, warm insoles, perfect for cold winters.
Trust me, having sore feet can be a mood killer and spoil your day. So, choosing practical, warm, stylish shoes to keep you comfortable throughout the day is essential. You don’t have to go for fancy footwear that may not be practical or warm enough. Frozen toes are not fun, especially when you’re out and about all day.
Speaking of boots, I prefer Rieker. I own two types—one that I wear with a wool insert and thick socks for extra warmth and another that’s more stylish and has a slight heel that I find more comfortable than a flat shoe.
The new pair of Rieker boots has sheep wool inside, which is perfect for colder weather. Both types are warm and are ideal for the temperature in early December.
Your Accessories
Cozy Scarf
When travelling in chilly weather, it’s essential to pack a cozy scarf. Not only does it keep your neck warm, but it also adds a fashionable touch to your outfit. You can wear it on your head if the wind is too cold.
Besides, you’ll probably wear the same jacket throughout your trip, so a scarf is an excellent way to add style and variety to your outfits. Why not bring a couple?
Scarves are available in various colours, sizes, and materials, enabling you to choose one that matches your unique style and preferences. With so many benefits of owning a scarf, it’s no surprise that it’s a must-have staple in any fashion-savvy individual’s wardrobe.
Gloves
It is essential to keep your hands protected and warm during cold weather. Wearing gloves is one way to achieve this, and a hand warmer can also provide extra warmth.
However, choosing the right pair can be complicated with many gloves available. From woollen knits to waterproof Gore-Tex, fingerless to touchscreen-compatible, various gloves suit everyone’s needs. It is essential to consider when and how you will use your gloves before choosing.
Remember, nothing is more satisfying than slipping your hands into a comfortable, well-made glove on a chilly day.
**Think about gloves that allow you to take pictures. I have gloves with a finger that can push the phone button.
Warm Hat
A warm hat is an essential accessory during colder months of the year. It provides insulation to protect your head from the bitter cold and can also add a stylish touch to any outfit.
The benefits of owning a warm hat are plentiful, as it can prevent frostbite or hypothermia and keep you feeling cozy and comfortable. Whether you prefer a classic beanie, a trendy pom-pom hat, or a sophisticated fedora, there is a warm hat for everyone. If you don’t like wearing a hat, you can use the hood of your hoodie or an oversized fluffy scarf.
For those who prefer wearing a warm hat, investing in a high-quality and stylish one can help them stay warm and look great this winter. However, it’s completely fine if you don’t need to wear one. I don’t wear either one and never did!! But I have a hat and a bandeau, just in case.
