Best Things To Do On A Two Days Trip In Brugge

hot chocolat in brugges

Bruges is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. It’s famous for its canals, and gothic facades.

There are many words I could use to describe the Belgian city of Bruges: medieval, romantic, historical, waffle, chocolate, you name it…

We spent two days in Bruges and can confirm this city is pure magic.
You see, the historic beauty of this city. And while it’s no doubt busy, Bruges is a city well deserving of its longtime reputation as Europe’s most idyllic fairytale town.

If you are a chocoholic like me, you will love Bruges.
An excellent place for shopping for chocolate as well as a chocolate museum!

Bruges’ crochet lace was famous in the 16th century, and you can still see ladies making it. Shops are as full of lace as you can imagine. My favorite is the tapestry shops with bags of all kinds, pillowcases etc.

The city center is closed to cars. It’s an easy city to explore on foot. As an alternative, since this is a tourist town, you’ll find horse-drawn carriages to take you around the cobblestone streets. You’ll be tempted by all the stores all over town and many museums to visit.

Explore the windmills of Bruges

We walk along the city ramparts to find four ancient windmills – all that remains of 25 to 30 such giants that once dotted the town walls.

If you’re looking to discover a unique and intriguing piece of history while taking in breathtaking views, look no further than the windmills of Bruges, Belgium.

These majestic structures stand proudly against the horizon, beckoning visitors to come and experience their incredible story and beauty.

Walking through Bruges’ beautiful streets and canals

Bruges is a charming city that offers visitors plenty of opportunities to explore its culture and history. One of the best ways to experience the city is by wandering through its beautiful little streets, which are filled with hidden treasures waiting to be discovered.

The canals in Bruges are particularly stunning, and taking a boat tour is a great way to see them up close. As you glide along the water, you’ll be able to admire some of the most beautiful facades of Bruges, which date back to the Middle Ages when the city was a bustling port.

In addition to its rich history, Bruges is also known for its shopping and dining scene. Visitors will find countless shops, cafes, and restaurants that offer unique products and delicious food, as well as handmade crafts that are distinctly Belgian.

So why not take a stroll through Bruges’ ancient streets and canals, and experience the magic and allure of this wonderful city for yourself?

Climb the Belfry of Bruges for a beautiful view over the city?

Bruges offers visitors an amazing experience of climbing the Belfry, a majestic tower located in the heart of the city. From the top, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the winding canals, towering spires, and centuries-old buildings that make Bruges a magical place.

This experience is a must-see for anyone visiting this enchanting city.

If you’re up for a 366-step climb, be prepared for a physically demanding experience due to the narrow stairs. Additionally, taking a break or allowing others to pass can be challenging due to the limited space.

Head to Markt Square

The most popular destination in Bruges is Markt Square, where visitors can see many iconic landmarks. It’s a great place to wander around and go shopping. If you’re planning a two-day trip to Bruges, Markt Square should be on your list of places to visit.

Market Square is a bustling hub of activity where locals and tourists alike gather to shop, dine, and explore. With its charming architecture, iconic landmarks, and vibrant energy, this is a destination not to be missed!

You will not be disappointed.

I enjoy visiting different chocolate shops.

Historic Centre of Brugge

The historic center of Brugge is a spectacularly well-preserved example of medieval European architecture and urban planning.

Located in the picturesque city of Bruges, Belgium, this UNESCO World Heritage Site features numerous beautiful buildings and structures, including the stunning Church of Our Lady, the medieval Belfry of Brugge, the Old St. John’s Hospital, and the Beguinage, to name just a few.

Visitors to the historic center of Brugge can marvel at the intricate lacework of the city’s narrow cobblestone streets and canals and explore the countless museums and galleries that are scattered throughout the area. Brugge’s historic center has something to offer for all visitors.

Minnewater Park and Bridge

From the hotel, a two-minute walk to the Minnewater Bridge, which sits above the Lake of Love. Head towards the verdant Minnewater Park for a view of the Castle de la Faille with its soaring spires.

There is a beautiful park called Minnewater Park located southeast of the lake. It’s a great place to escape and burn off some calories after indulging in delicious Belgian chocolate or waffles.

Minnewater Park and Bridge are one of the most beautiful attractions in the city. The many resident swan couples form the finishing touch to its romantic character.

The park is surrounded by trees, gardens and beautiful walking paths that offer visitors a great opportunity to relax and enjoy the serene environment. It also features a picturesque lake and a stunning bridge that provides the perfect spot for photos and sightseeing.

The architecture of the bridge is impressive and adds to the charm and beauty of the park.

Anyone visiting the city should make sure to add Minnewater Park and Bridge to their itinerary.

Diamond Museum

It is interesting to note that diamond polishing originated in Bruges, thanks to the work of a renowned goldsmith.

I have been fascinated by the world of diamonds while exploring the stunning collections from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The museum is dedicated to showcasing the cultural and geological significance of diamonds, from their formation deep within the Earth to their transformation into the dazzling jewelry that we see today.

Embark on a journey through time to discover the various myths, legends, and traditions related to diamonds.

You’ll be amazed by rare specimens like the renowned Hope Diamond and gain knowledge about the elaborate process of diamond cutting and polishing, which turns rough stones into valuable gems.

Whether you are a dedicated gem enthusiast or simply curious about the allure of diamonds, the Diamond Museum in Belgium is the perfect destination for you.

How To ?

How to get to Bruges, Belgium?

Upon arrival at the airport, we boarded a train that took us directly to Bruges. The train journey from Brussels Airport to Bruges takes approximately one and a half hours.

Once we arrived at the train station in Bruges, it was a simple 15-20 minute walk to our hotel and the city center.

We also discovered a complimentary shuttle bus outside of the train station that transported us to Markt Square.

How to get around in Bruges?

If you want to explore Bruges and discover as many hidden alleys and special places as possible, then walking is your best option.

Bruges isn’t a big city, so it’s perfectly possible to see all the sights on foot.

If walking isn’t your thing, there are alternative options for exploring Bruges, such as taking a boat ride on the canals or a carriage ride through the charming cobbled streets.

Additionally, you can utilize the bus system, which will conveniently drop you off at various locations along their route.

When is the best time to travel to Bruges?

Belgium is a country with mild winters and summers. There are no extreme weather conditions.

However, if you want good weather, I recommend that you visit Bruges between April and October.

Of course, you always have the chance that it will rain during those months as well. It’s still Belgium.

We encountered rain only the first morning there. Temperature between 15-18 Celsius.

End of September, the weather was beautiful and warm, with occasional rainfall.

Good to Know

 Souvenir

When shopping for chocolate or souvenirs, it’s best to buy them while walking since it may be difficult to find your way back or navigate the streets later on.

It’s also a good idea to bring an umbrella with you, even on sunny days, just in case it rains unexpectedly.

Book your hotel somewhere central

I recommend staying in Bruges, its popularity with day trippers means that you’ll be able to enjoy the city much more.

Our Hotel was right beside the train station and within walking distance of the town. They have also a free shuttle bus.

Most of Brussels’ most touristy sights are within walking distance so it’s important to book somewhere in the heart of the action.

**This is a tiny room, with a shower and sink in the room!! I am not claustrophobic, but two days for me was enough.
